Taiwan's nuclear tryst


Taiwan's attempt to gain leverage in the cross-strait stand-off with the People's Republic of China in the mid seventies by launching a nuclear weapons programme was immediately thwarted by the United States.

Newly released classified documents made available by the US National Archive shed considerable light on the pressure exerted by the US on Taiwan to cease its nascent nuclear weapons programme. The documents also help to inform current analysis of the US-Taiwan relationship.
