Biography
Dr Richard Connolly is director of the consultancy, Eastern Advisory Group, and an associate fellow at the Centre for New American Security (CNAS) in Washington, D.C. He was previously director of the Centre for Russian, European and Eurasian Studies (CREES) at the University of Birmingham and an associate fellow on the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House.
He is a specialist on Russia's political economy, with a focus on the impact of sanctions on the Russian economy, the defence, financial and energy sectors, and the phenomenon of criminal corporate raiding (or reiderstvo).
Dr Connolly is the author of Russia’s Response to Sanctions, published by Cambridge University Press in 2018, which is the only book that examined Russia's policy response to sanctions after 2014. He is also the author of the Very Short Introduction to the Russian Economy, published by Oxford University Press in 2020 (second edition forthcoming). His latest book, The Kalashnikov Economy: How Russia's Militarised Economy will Distort its Future, is scheduled for publication in 2026.
