They [Russian forces] continue to very slowly grind their way forwards at an enormous cost, but this is an attritional form of warfare that they seem comfortable that they can sustain for the time being...If you are that's out in the East [of Ukraine], I would hesitate to describe many of the places as strategic in truth. They're all important to the defenders, but very few of these are going to change the war...[Chasiv Yar] is a town, relatively small, under 15,000 population, that has been reduced to rubble. It's taken the Russians up to 18 months to take it, and we still don't think they've completely cleared it. But it's part of the strong Ukrainian defensive line."
