Subsea cables
We’ve got to remember that these cables go through different legal definitions of water, and that means different jurisdictions. If the cable is within the territorial waters of the UK, or any country, [...] out to 12 miles, then we have complete sovereignty and we can act with our law enforcement agencies [...]. Going beyond that, into exclusive economic zones [...] or into the high seas [...], it is very difficult, and the international laws and UN conventions that govern this haven’t really caught up with the technology [...] we’re using today. This needs to be a collaborative approach by the UN, by all countries, to agree on a new regime going forwards [...]. It’s not just us that’s vulnerable, everyone is vulnerable, and it will be in everyone’s interest to work together to come up with a way of protecting it in the future.
