Danny Shaw

RUSI Senior Associate Fellow, Organised Crime and Policing

Danny Shaw is a journalist and commentator who specialises in crime, policing, security, justice and immigration.

During a 31-year career at the BBC, he appeared regularly on Radio 4, the BBC News Channel and 5 Live where, among countless stories, he reported on the murder of Jill Dando, the 7/7 bombings, the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan and the 2017 terror attacks. As Home Affairs Correspondent, Danny covered the development of new and controversial counter-terrorism powers, the challenges posed by immigration, crises in prisons across England and Wales, and controversies around state surveillance and privacy.

He won a series of awards for documentaries about drugs issues, sentencing, restorative justice and the Crown Prosecution Service, before leaving the BBC in 2020 to work for the criminal justice think-tank Crest Advisory where he led a research project on the use of out-of-court disposals.

Danny was a visiting lecturer in journalism at City St George’s University for 13 years, and in the lead up to the 2024 General Election he worked for Yvette Cooper MP, who was then Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, developing policy ideas for government on border security, knife crime and policing.

He now combines media training and advisory work with a varied freelance journalism career. Among a number of outlets, he writes for the Telegraph, the Times, the i-paper and the Spectator, and broadcasts for the BBC, Sky News, Times Radio and LBC.
