The Dramatic Rise of Vehicle Theft in the UK

Car thefts in the UK have increased by 75% since 2013, amid a ‘perfect storm’ of enabling factors.

Evidence shows that the curse doesn’t just affect luxury vehicles; the whole spectrum of cars are affected and the crime costs the British economy billions of pounds every year.

Researchers from RUSI’s Organised Crime and Policing team have been working to understand this evolving threat. Through extensive analysis of the literature, datasets and interviews with a wide range of experts from law enforcement and the private sector, they have produced the first open access, contemporary analysis of the typologies, trends and responses to vehicle theft in the UK.

In this video commentary, Alastair Greig, Research Analyst in RUSI’s Cyber team, outlines the research effort’s key findings and recommendations.
