RUSI Gives Evidence to Parliament on UK Energy Resilience
RUSI Research Fellow Dan Marks recently gave evidence to Parliament’s Energy Security and Net Zero Committee during an urgent hearing on UK energy resilience following the oil and gas supply shock triggered by the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Committee, meeting on 25 March, examined the UK’s exposure to energy price shocks, supply disruption and infrastructure risks amid ongoing geopolitical volatility.
Marks told the committee that the electricity market in the UK was the area most in need of change and that a greater sense of urgency in reforming energy policy to enhance national resilience and security was required. He highlighted the role of local and decentralised resilience measures and the value of demand management in helping exposed businesses protect themselves from price shocks.
Marks told MPs:
What perhaps is missing sometimes is the emergency mindset - that now is the time to break things.
