The Challenger 3 programme is really a stopgap...it's going to be heavy, and underpowered as the engine is not receiving an upgrade, which is because we are still having this debate about what the future of armour, and tanks in particular, looks like on the battlefield. There is still probably going to be a need for what a tank provides – which is mobile, protective, heavy firepower – but the question is what that looks like – and that is probably not going to look like a 60- to 70-tonne armoured vehicle."
