AI infrastructure investments
The dependency on US companies stands in direct contrast to the UK’s desire for sovereign tech capabilities…Without US funding, the UK cannot fulfil its own tech ambitions.
The announcement of US private sector investments into UK AI infrastructure allows the UK to remain relevant in the race for AI technologies. Yet they also demonstrate how dependent the UK is on foreign investment to fulfil its tech ambitions. The UK AI action plan set ambitious targets for the UK – but it is apparent that investment from US companies is required to realise them. Without US funding, the UK cannot fulfil its own tech ambitions.
The investments feed into the UK's mission for economic growth but the dependence on US tech and capital raises security concerns. The dependency on US companies stands in direct contrast to the UK's desire for sovereign technologies.
The timing of the announcements during President Trump's visit illustrates how much tech investments are tied to the current US administration. The close connection between private sector investment and charm offensives designed to win favour with political decision makers raises further security questions for the UK.
