Toward A New Doctrine For Economic Security
Report by the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee
ECONOMIC SECURITY
'Economic security is national security' – so said the British Prime Minister in his foreword to the 2025 National Security Strategy. The UK is increasingly exposed to threats across a spectrum of economic security interests, from both state and non-state actors. As geopolitical risk rises, so too does the UK’s vulnerability. But is the UK’s economic security regime fit for the future? That is the question examined in this report from the House of Commons Business and Trade Committee.
This report is a landmark assessment of the UK’s economic security threats and defences, and calls for a major upgrade of the UK’s economic security toolkit. The Centre for Finance and Security (CFS) at RUSI contributed an analysis of international economic security regimes, which helped shape the Committee’s conclusions. A launch event for the report was held at RUSI, with a keynote speech from the Chair of the Business and Trade Committee, Liam Byrne MP, and an expert panel discussion moderated by CFS Director Tom Keatinge.
