Cryptocurrencies in UK Politics
The Rycroft independent review into countering foreign financial influence and interference in UK politics has published its report and adopted key recommendations from the Centre for Finance and Security at RUSI on the risks posed by cryptocurrency donations.
The review recommends the introduction of a moratorium, not a ban, on crypto donations, on the basis that a moratorium would pause the immediate risks of cryptocurrency donations while providing the space to develop a robust regulatory regime and build increased law enforcement capacity.
This recommendation endorses the position of RUSI’s Cryptocurrencies in UK Politics project, led by Research Fellow Eliza Lockhart and CFS Director Tom Keatinge, which was also adopted by the recent report from the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy.
