Political finance and foreign interference report

Cryptocurrencies in UK Politics

The Joint Committee on National Security Strategy (JCNSS) has published a report on political finance and foreign interference as part of its Defending Democracy inquiry. The JCNSS report draws heavily on the work of the Centre for Finance at RUSI regarding the scale and severity of foreign financial interference threats faced by the UK, and the response required.

Significantly, the JCNSS recommends an immediate moratorium on crypto donations – endorsing what our Cryptocurrencies in UK Politics project has found – that a ‘last mile’ ban creates a false sense of security because it does not address the upstream risks posed by crypto-enabled financial flows. Instead, referencing the evidence given by CFS Director Tom Keatinge, the Committee calls for an immediate moratorium to pause our current exposure, while building the regulatory and enforcement capabilities needed to manage this risk before the next general election.
