Ukraine at War
We undertake operational analysis based upon fieldwork, tracking the dynamics and lessons to be learned during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has seen the return of large scale conventional warfare to Europe. Amidst a wider debate over a new revolution in military affairs, the clarity of a renewed threat from Russia, and corresponding need to regenerate European conventional deterrence, the war’s character must be understood if its lessons are to be leveraged.
RUSI researchers, working in Ukraine alongside the Armed Forces of Ukrainian, have been working to track the developments of the war, observe emerging tactics and technologies, and Russian adaptation.
Aims and objectives
In undertaking this project on the war in Ukraine, we:
- conduct operational research on the character of the war in Ukraine.
- observe the function of emerging Russian and Ukrainian capabilities
- codify emerging concepts and approaches
- identify enduring lessons relevant to other theatres to inform force design.
