Human Security, Stabilisation and Peacebuilding
We examine the causes and impacts of security threats, and how societies can strengthen protection, stability and resilience.
Programme Introduction
We examine how governments, security organisations and wider society can work together to address threats, protect communities and build lasting peace. Our research spans military human security commitments, democratic governance and post-conflict recovery.
We champion integrated approaches that bring together different policies, programmes and expertise to make the best use of available resources and achieve lasting impact. More than simply improving efficiency, this means recognising that interconnected threats and instability require joined-up responses that address the full range of risks and strengthen protection and resilience across society.
Programme Themes
Intersectional Gender Mainstreaming
We examine how gender and other aspects of identity shape people's experiences of conflict and insecurity, and how these perspectives can be better reflected in policy and practice. Our work focuses on putting intersectional gender mainstreaming into practice, demonstrating its value and embedding Women, Peace and Security (WPS) priorities and commitments in policy development.
Training, Advisory Support and Capacity Building
We combine research and practical expertise to strengthen the skills and capabilities of government departments, practitioners, law enforcement and security professionals. Through tailored training, workshops and advisory support, we help organisations apply best practice and develop and deliver more effective policies and programmes.
Human Security
We examine how conflict and insecurity affect individuals and communities, recognising that people's experiences and needs differ according to gender and other aspects of identity.
Our work explores the practical application of human security across military and civilian contexts. This includes protecting civilians, preventing conflict-related sexual violence and human trafficking, safeguarding children affected by armed conflict and protecting cultural heritage. We also examine how Women, Peace and Security commitments can improve the inclusion of women in military operations and ensure that the different impacts of conflict are understood and addressed.
Conflict Resolution, Stabilisation and Peacebuilding
We examine how international interventions can prevent, manage and resolve conflict, bringing together diplomacy, development and defence to support stability and protect communities. Our research considers the effectiveness of these approaches, including efforts to prevent atrocities and address the underlying drivers of conflict.
We also explore the role of security sector assistance and reform, including the impact of militias, paramilitary organisations and community defence forces in conflict environments. Our peacebuilding work focuses on strengthening institutions, transforming approaches to governance and community engagement, and building societal resilience to reduce the risk of renewed conflict.
