Dr Philip Shetler-Jones

Biography

Dr Philip Shetler-Jones is a Senior Research Fellow in the International Security team at RUSI. His research is concentrated on Indo-Pacific security. His recent work focuses on the UK-Japan security partnership, the UK-South Korea security partnership, and Taiwan’s security and cross-strait relations, specifically in the area of 'Grey Zone' action below the threshold of conventional conflict.

Prior to joining RUSI, Dr Shetler-Jones was coordinator in the project 'Enhancing Security Cooperation in and With Asia' (ESIWA) for the EU and led the international security program at the World Economic Forum. Previously, Dr Shetler-Jones served as an officer in the UK Royal Marine Commandos, held positions at the United Nations and the European Union, and consulted for NATO, the Organisation for Security Cooperation in Europe, the UK Ministry of Defence, and Chatham House.

Dr Shetler-Jones holds a PhD, MA and BA from The University of Sheffield and an MA from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He has been a visiting fellow at the Council on Geostrategy and is a Honorary Research Fellow at the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield, and a fellow of the Strategic Communications Education and Research Unit at the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo.
