Colonel David Rew

David Rew is a Honorary Senior Lecturer and Consultant General Surgeon within the faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton.

For the past decade, he has led a unique programme in digital transformation, data visualisation and cancer data systems at University Hospital Southampton.

The solution informs the global search for an efficient and unifying electronic patient record for health professionals, for clinical researchers and for all citizens, and it creates new opportunities in many public sector and commercial applications.

As a consultant surgeon in full time NHS professional practice, he has a broad range of academic and educational interests which contribute to the work and reputation of the University of Southampton.

As the international Subject Chair for Medicine of the Content Selection and Advisory Board of the SCOPUS Citation System since 2009, he makes a significant contribution to securing quality standards and ethics in global academic publishing.

In his SCOPUS role he has contributed to the internationalisation of academic output from the STEM communities of Russia and the Cyrillic language states.

As a member of the Territorial, Regular and Army Reserve from 1975 to 2018, his contributory work in developing and delivering complex trauma care in the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan was recognised in HM the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2015.

He is an Innovation and Thought Leader in the NHS and UHS Digital Exemplar Programmes. His influential and original work in creating, developing and delivering transformative enhancements to the electronic patient record programme and its research elements has been recognised though international consultancies.

In 2017, he was appointed to membership of the Strategic Advisory Team for Healthcare Technologies of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
