Sarah Lain is currently a Research Advisor, based in Kyiv. She previously served as a Research Fellow at RUSI in the International Security Studies team, focusing on post-Soviet foreign policy.
Sarah’s research has focused in particular on Russia's foreign policy, particularly towards the EU, Ukraine and Syria, as well as China's growing influence in Central Asia and how this affects Russia's relations with the region. Apart from foreign policy, Sarah has a special interest in understanding financial crime and illicit finance emanating from post-Soviet countries. In 2016 she served as specialist advisor to the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, assisting them on their enquiry into UK-Russia bilateral relations.
Prior to joining RUSI, Sarah worked in the Corporate Intelligence team within KPMG London’s Forensic practice and previously at Control Risks. In both roles, she worked on integrity due diligence reports, fraud investigations and anti-bribery and corruption risk assessments, focusing on Russia and the CIS.
Sarah has lived in Ukraine and Russia. She holds a BA in History from the University of Cambridge and also passed the Certified Fraud Examiner qualification.
