Admiral (Retd) Sir Ian Forbes retired from the Royal Navy in 2004 after thirty-eight years of service.
He commanded at every level including the carrier HMS Invincible, the UK Battlegroup, the Surface Flotilla, and the NATO Supreme Allied Command in Norfolk, Virginia. In this last appointment he was responsible for establishing the new Allied Command Transformation. He was involved in conflict and crisis operations off Iceland, off the Falklands, off Kosovo and in the Gulf.
Sir Ian is a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) and a Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB). He was also awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service (QCVS) for operations off Bosnia in 1996. A holder of the US Legion of Merit, he was the first recipient of the NATO Meritorious Service Medal for his work on NATO Transformation.
A Distinguished Fellow of RUSI, he is an alumnus of the Windsor Leadership Trust and the chairman of the Naval Review. He works as a consultant and mentor.
He is a senior executive adviser to the global consulting firm Booz and Company, now Strategy&Pwc. He is also the chairman of the Eastbourne College Charity, his old school, encompassing Eastbourne College and St Andrews Preparatory School. Since 2013, he has been president of the Forces Pension Society.
