Dr Aaron Edwards

Aaron Edwards is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Defence and International Affairs at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

An Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Leicester, Aaron holds Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Advance HE (FHEA). He is also a member of the Security Institute and the International Association for Intelligence Education.

Aaron was awarded his PhD in Politics and International Studies from the Queen’s University of Belfast in 2006, after which he managed a major peace and reconciliation programme at the International Conflict Research Institute (INCORE) at Ulster University. As an academic-practitioner he was involved in several DDR initiatives. His research focuses on how states and their armed forces, law enforcement and intelligence agencies respond to complex security challenges domestically and internationally.

Aaron is the author several books, including Strategy in War and Peace: A Critical Introduction (2017), Agents of Influence: Britain’s Secret Intelligence War Against the IRA (2021) and, along with Frank Ledwidge and Helen Parr, is editor of Ground Truth: The Moral Component in Contemporary British Warfare (2024), which was shortlisted for the Society for Army Historical Research’s Templer Medal. He latest book, Enemies Within, is a major study of the Ulster Freedom Fighters, a loyalist terrorist group, and the intelligence-led operation that brought an end to its violent campaign.
