The SMS blaster ... will initially send out a very strong signal to all of the phones within about a five hundred to two thousand metre radius around that device. It will then force phones to connect to its network by impersonating a legitimate phone mast...Once those phones are then connected to that mast, it will send a fraudulent SMS to them. Because of certain mitigations that are removed by using this technique, it can impersonate almost any sender, so HMRC, a local parking fine, a council et cetera. And once this the SMS message has been sent out to these phones."
