Europe should certainly be concerned about the damage that has already been done to NATO's political stability and about views on US military reliability. I don't think that those countries should now be cutting off all contact with the US because Trump is transactional and there is still clearly an overlap of interests between Europe and the US. But Europe does have to be thinking about how it can maintain sovereignty over its capabilities, where it can invest to give itself more room to manoeuvre and how Europe thinks about deterrence of threats, both conventional and nuclear, if US support is likely to be uncertain."
