Military Concepts and Force Design
We scan the horizon of future operational problems and how forces may be trained, structured and equipped to solve emerging challenges.
To remain competitive, militaries must ensure that their equipment, training and tactics remain relevant as technology and the political context in which they operate change.
Developing new military technologies can take 10–15 years. Militaries must therefore constantly balance anticipating the future with putting those ideas into practice. This means adapting their structures around technologies that are not yet proven, while also accounting for the unexpected consequences of introducing new tools of war.
Through the Military Concepts and Force Design programme, the Military Sciences team assesses how technology could change warfare and how militaries should prepare to take advantage of these changes over a 15-year horizon.
