Maria Sofia joined RUSI in 2020 as a Research Analyst at RUSI’s Centre for Financial Crime and Security Studies. She is currently working on a project funded by the National Endowment for Democracy, focusing on restricting Kleptocracy in the first mile through monitoring and accountability in Latin America and East Africa.

Prior to joining RUSI, Maria Sofia was an intern with the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme, researching illegal trafficking, migration and piracy in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Before that she worked as a Research Assistant for Proetica, the Peruvian chapter for Transparency International, examining international anticorruption mechanisms. She holds and MA (Hons) in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh.
