Mustafa Alani

Associate Fellow
Dr Mustapha Alani is Associate Fellow of RUSI. He is also a Senior Advisor & Director of Security and terrorism Studies Program at the Gulf Research Center (GRC), Dubai.

Dr Alani was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and was educated in the Department of Politics at the University of Baghdad. He went on to complete his studies at Keele University's Department of International Relations and Exeter University's Department of Politics. Since 1988 he has been a consultant and advisor to official institutions and major commercial organizations on political and security developments in the Middle East. His special focus is on the politics and security of the Gulf States, including Iraq and Iran, and he has studied Islamist fundamentalist groups and Islamist terrorist organizations for many years. His publications include: Operation Vantage: British Military Intervention in Kuwait (London: LAAM, 1990); "Saudi Arabia: the Threat from Within" in Jane's Intelligence Review no. 12 and "Saudi Arabia" in Jane's Sentinel (1996); The Future of Iraqi Oil (co-author; Robertson Research International, 1998). He is presently researching two projects, including a three-volume history of Kuwait from 1740 to 1990. Dr Alani is a frequent contributor to English-language and Arabic media.
