On 26 July 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an updated version of Russia’s maritime (naval) doctrine. In light of Russia’s confrontation with the West over Ukraine, the doctrine’s overt anti-NATO provisions for the Atlantic region have already led some to perceive it as a thinly veiled threat to trans-Atlantic sea lanes of communication (SLOC).
