Whitehall Dialogue - Russian Main Battle Tanks: Assessing the Capabilities of the Next Generation

calendarclock - (GMT)

A presentation by Dr Igor Sutyagin, Research Fellow, Russian Studies, Royal United Services Institute.Dr Igor Sutyagin 4

Russian engineers are currently working on a new design for the next generation main battle tank under the ‘Armata’ research and development programme. The programme expects to produce a universal chassis, forming the basis of a family of related armoured fighting vehicles. It is envisaged that this revitalisation of armoured design will lead to the standardisation of the Russian Army’s combat equipment.

In his presentation, Dr Sutyagin will discuss the Russian operational concepts which define the Armata research programme. Focussing specifically on the design philosophy, he will consider the strengths and weaknesses of the new tank by comparing it with its predecessors and assessing its planned derivatives and armaments.

Dr Igor Sutyagin completed his PhD in History of Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Moscow Institute of US and Canadian Studies (Russian Academy of Sciences), prior to joining RUSI. His thesis explored the US Navy's role in carrying out the US foreign policy tasks throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He has written extensively on nuclear and conventional arms control, including naval arms control, safety and security of nuclear weapons, modernisation and development of armaments, as well as issues associated with anti-ballistic missile systems and their stabilising influence upon the US-Russian relationship. He has authored over 100 articles and booklets published in the Soviet Union/Russia, the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Switzerland. He is also the co-author of the book Russian Strategic Nuclear Weapons. Dr Sutyagin worked at the Institute of US and Canadian Studies for twelve years in the Political-Military Studies Department where he held the position of Head of Section, focussing on US military-technical and military-economic policy.

Refreshments will be served from 1515.
