A presentation by David Lister, Chief Information Officer, National Grid plc.
As the UK energy industry works to ensure continued security of supply, the national grid will face new challenges in operating an electricity transmission system with intermittent renewable generation, new larger nuclear power stations and greater interconnection. It is expected that day-to-day operation of the transmission networks will become more complex; the way they operate and the way the electricity market operates are likely to change and consumer interaction with the market may also change.
In his presentation, David Lister will discuss work currently underway with other energy companies, the UK government and Ofgem to produce a vision of the network reinforcements as well as market and framework changes required for the future. He will outline how these challenges can be addressed by building on existing expertise in operating transmission networks and by seeking out innovative solutions, which allow more parties to play a role in securing energy supply in the UK.
David Lister became Chief Information Officer (CIO) at National Grid in March 2009. He was previously Group CIO and Chief Architect at Royal Bank of Scotland and CIO at Reuters. Prior to that, he was at Boots where he overhauled the retailer's IT strategy with a £300m modernisation programme. David trained as an architect before moving into IT in local government and then the chemicals industry. A spell in management consultancy at Coopers & Lybrand followed, before joining Guinness where he spent 10 years in senior IT roles.
Refreshments will be served from 1515.
