Stumbling Giant by Timothy BeardsonTimothy Beardson, author of Stumbling Giant: The Threats to China's Future, will lead a presentation discussing the finding of this new book.

After 'Reform and Opening up' in 1978, China became one of the world's fastest-growing major economies throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Yet from 2000, the reforms stalled. Growth is now slowing. With a declining labour force, a plummeting birth-rate and massive gender disparity, Timothy Beardson argues that it is hard to see the country enjoying high economic growth beyond 2030. China has a limited window of opportunity in which it must radically reform or fall into a "middle income trap," a national sclerosis brought about when a fast-rising economy runs out of steam and loses its ability to accommodate an under-employed population. To discuss these and many other issues concerning China's rise, Timothy Beardson, the acclaimed author of the recently published Stumbling Giant: The Threats to China's Future will provide a presentation and a moderated question and answer session.

Timothy Beardson was educated as a historian, but worked as a financier in Hong Kong and China for thirty five years. He is closely engaged with the country, its leadership and its people. Mr Beardson was the founder and majority shareholder of Crosby, the first foreign investment bank to open in China, a firm that eventually became the largest independent investment bank in Asia.  Crosby was the only foreign bank invited to participate in the working party that set up the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Today, in addition to over-seeing his investments in China, Beardson continues to be involved with the Chinese education system by chairing the China Oxford Scholarship Fund, which assists low-income Chinese students to take postgraduate studies at Oxford University.
