In Conversation with Major-General Jonathan Shaw: The Strategic Defence and Security Review We Need
As part of RUSI’s SDSR Breakfast Briefing series, Major-General Jonathan Shaw will be in conversation with RUSI’s Director-General, Professor Michael Clarke, to discuss the issues raised in his latest book and look ahead to the next SDSR.
In his recently published book Britain in a Perilous World: The Strategic Defence and Security Review We Need, Major General Shaw argues that the coalition government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review of 2010 hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Major defence projects such as the NIMROD aircraft were abandoned at huge cost while others were controversially continued because they were too expensive to scrap. He suggests how the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review can be improved and why the credibility of our political class depends on getting it right. Arguing for the need to rethink the way Whitehall devises strategy and reaches decisions, Major-General Shaw uses his extensive personal experience of working in Whitehall and applying strategy in the field to challenge the assumptions that underlie Whitehall practice.
