Implementation Day of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the agreement reached by Iran and the P5+1 in July 2015, is fast approaching.
The parties have been able to meet their obligations throughout the first two phases of the agreement (Finalisation Day and Adoption Day) and are now getting ready to implement the remaining steps: Iran is continuing to curb its most sensitive nuclear activities, while the United States and the EU are preparing for the lifting of nuclear-related sanctions against Tehran.
Both Washington and Tehran have so far been able to successfully contain the efforts of those domestically opposed to the nuclear agreement. With elections soon taking place in both countries, however, questions will now turn on whether and how the nuclear deal will be affected by domestic politics in Iran and in the U.S. in the next few months. RUSI experts will be joined by Gary Samore, the White House's former Coordinator on Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction, to discuss the next developments on the Iranian nuclear issue and potential complications as a consequence of domestic politics in Tehran and Washington.
- Gary Samore, executive director for Research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Universityand White House's former Coordinator on Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction.
- Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi, Research Analyst on security in the Middle East at RUSI.
- Timothy Stafford, Research Analyst on proliferation and nuclear policy at RUSI.
The panel will be moderated by Professor Ali Ansari, Senior Associate Fellow at RUSI and Director of the St. Andrew’s Institute for Iranian Studies.
