The Radical Right in Latin America: Regional Security Dynamics and Transnational Links

The recent storming of Brazil’s democratic institutions by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro quickly drew comparisons and associations with the 6 January 2021 US Capitol attack.

This discussion will explore the transnational links of actors involved in the two events, as well as broader ties shared by the emerging radical right networks in Latin America. With accusations that law enforcement personnel in Brasilia initially refused to intervene to stop the attempted coup, the webinar will also address how the far-right threat has been allowed to develop.

Professor Feliciano de Sá Guimarães, a contributor to the edited volume, will also discuss their research on the far-right in Brazil including a recent study of embedded ‘globalism’ conspiracy theories in Bolsonaro’s cabinet.

Dr Andreza Aruska De Souza Santos will provide insights from their work comparing right-wing movements in Brazil and Latin America with similar movements outside the region.

The event will be chaired by Dr Carlos Solar, RUSI Senior Research Fellow, Latin American Security.

This webinar is the second in a quarterly event series linked to RUSI’s Far-Right Extremism and Terrorism (FRET) research programme. In the context of this research programme, the ‘far right’ is understood as an umbrella term encompassing both the ‘radical right’ and the ‘extreme right’ on the right-wing spectrum; for more details on these definitions, please refer to our programme page. The primary focus of this programme is on movements where there is violent action or professed intent, or actions or narratives that might lead to or encourage others to resort to violence.
