NATO: A Revitalised Alliance for a Dynamic World

calendarclock - (GMT)

Admiral Giampaolo Di PaolaA lecture by Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and Senior Military Advisor to the Alliance’s Secretary General and North Atlantic Council.

It is a widely held view that NATO remains the most capable political-military Alliance in the world. Three words illustrate the Alliance’s approach to security, acknowledged at the NATO Summit in Lisbon: Transformation, anticipation and co-operation. The Allies have recognised the new security challenges which are now enshrined in the Strategic Concept which will shape the transformation of forces, structures and procedures for the next ten years and beyond.

NATO’s Heads of State and Government will develop new capabilities in order to anticipate future threats that could emerge in the course of the next decade. In a changing world, the Atlantic community has acknowledged the need to act with others through renewed partnerships with traditional partners, but also with emerging powers and international organisations. In his lecture, Admiral Di Paola will reflect on the necessity for NATO to adapt to the ever changing global security environment in order to remain relevant.

Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola became the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee in Brussels on 27 June 2008. Prior to taking up this appointment, he served as the Chief of Defence of the Italian Armed Forces from 2004 to 2008. He also served as Secretary General of Defence / National Armaments Director from 2001 to 2004. Admiral Di Paola joined the Italian Navy in 1963 and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1966. He has commanded submarines, a frigate and the aircraft carrier Garibaldi. He holds a degree in Strategic and Military Sciences and an ‘ad honorem’ Masters degree in Sciences.
