Rt Hon James Arbuthnot MP, Chairman of the House of Commons Defence Select Committee, will join Dr John Louth and Dr Henrik Heidenkamp to mark the launch of the new RUSI Whitehall Paper, The Defence Industrial Triptych.
The relationship between the businesses that contribute towards the defence and security of the state and government is a critical one; it often underscores a modern state’s foreign policy and sense of place in the world. Yet, despite its clear importance, this subject is underexplored and rarely analysed in a rigorous manner. As a consequence, government defence industrial policies, if they exist at all, often seem somewhat contrived, ill-considered and contradictory.
The Defence Industrial Triptych systematically analyses the components and drivers of the relationships that bind a government to its defence industrial base by examining three major case studies: the UK, US and Germany. As defence retrenchment hits NATO post-Afghanistan and as the UK approaches the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review, the relationships this book explores are more important than ever.
A drinks’ reception will be held from 1800-1845, followed by a summary of the book from 1845-1930 by the authors in conversation with Mr Arbuthnot. Copies of The Defence Industrial Triptych will be on sale at the launch for a special price of £15.
Priority will be given to RUSI members and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To become a member, please click here.
