UK PONI: Exploring the Impacts of Brexit on the UK Nuclear Industry

This event will consider the impact of leaving Euratom on the UK nuclear industry.

At a time when the UK is embarking on new nuclear power stations and working to detangle itself from the EU, many have argued that withdrawing from Euratom is not necessary or advantageous for the UK.

The debate on exiting Euratom along with the European Union has been high prioirty for discussion in the UK nuclear community since its announcement.

Speakers include:

Markku Koskelainen is the Brexit lead for the NDA estate. Previously Markku has worked in the Strategy function looking after the NDA strategy development programme. Markku joined the NDA from Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority where he worked as an inspector in radiation practices regulation. Originally Markku joined the nuclear industry in Research and Development at Westlakes Research Institute. His subsequent career, all in the nuclear sector, has taken him through roles in consultancy and regulation both in the UK and Finland.

Oliver Dawkins is a thermofluids engineer at Rolls-Royce in Derby. Oliver is keen to engage with the nuclear industry outside of his workplace and has attended a number of civil and defence nuclear conferences. He holds a MSci in Physics from the University of Birmingham.

The event will conclude with a drinks and networking reception which is open to all attendees.

Sellafield Site Tour

During the afternoon there will be a guided tour of Sellafield including a visit to the Thermal Oxide Reprocess Plant (THORP) viewing gallery and in-depth coach tour of the site giving delegates an overview of Sellafield’s history and present day operations.
