Russians Among Us: Sleeper Cells, Ghost Stories and the Hunt for Putin’s Agents

calendarclock - (GMT)

Gordon Corera, Security Correspondent, BBC, will discuss his latest book, ‘Russians Among Us’, and the incredible lengths the Putin regime has gone to in entrenching its operatives in the West.

In 2010, a group of Russian deep cover ‘sleeper agents’ were arrested in the US. It was the culmination of a decade-long investigation, and ten people, including Anna Chapman, were eventually swapped for four people held in Russia. At the time, the episode was seen as simply a throwback to the Cold War, but that perception would prove to be a costly mistake. For it was a reminder that the Russian threat had never gone away, and that it was shifting into a much more disruptive new phase. Today, the danger is clearer than ever, following the poisoning in the UK of Sergei Skripal, one of the spies who was swapped at that time, and growing evidence of broader Russian interference in the United States.

In this webinar, Gordon Corera will tell the story of the deep cover spies in America and the FBI agents who tracked them. He will also discuss how Cold War spying has evolved, and its manifestations today.

Gordon Corera is the BBC’s Security Correspondent. He has reported from around the world on terrorism, intelligence and cyber-security. He is the author of five books, including ‘Russians Among Us: Sleeper Cells, Ghost Stories and the Hunt for Putin’s Spies’ and ‘MI6: Life and Death in the British Secret Service’. He has made several documentary series for the BBC about the intelligence services.

The webinar will be moderated by Suzanne Raine RUSI Trustee and former Head of the UK Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre.
