As well as being the Imam of the Ansar, a Sufi order, Imam Sadiq Al Mahdi is the leader of the National Umma Party and was Prime Minister of Sudan from 1986 until 1989, when he was deposed in a coup by now President Omar al Bashir, and continues to seek an alternative path for Sudanese politics.

This event will be chaired by Dame Rosalind Marsden. 

Dame Rosalind Marsden is an Associate Fellow at Chatham House where she advises the Africa Programme on Sudan and South Sudan and also works as a consultant for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue.  She was previously the EU Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan.  Before joining the EU, she was the British Ambassador to Afghanistan, the British Ambassador to Sudan and the Consul-General in Basra. She also served as Head of the United Nations Department and Director (Asia-Pacific) in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.  Rosalind is a Trustee of several peacebuilding organisations and an Honorary Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford.
