The NATO Allied Joint Force Command in Naples is focused on providing advice and assistance to missions in identifying the root causes of instability and strengthening partnerships as a component of projecting stability. As part of a new initiative, formally established in September 2017, the NATO Strategic Direction Hub South connects allies, partners, NGO’s and academia to better understand and overcome challenges, as well as look for opportunities in NATO’s South (Middle East, North Africa, Sahel and Sub-Saharan Africa).

Although NATO is no stranger to operating in Africa and the Middle East, operating in an area and understanding an area are two separate efforts. Through a holistic and collaborative approach, NATO’s Southern Hub also builds networks and relationships with international organisations, including the African Union, to combat illicit trafficking and terrorism, which has a direct spill over effect on Europe.

In his lecture, Lieutenant General Portolano discussed how NATO is working with partners to build trust and confidence, and contribute to the coordination, synchronisation and de-confliction of NATO activities across the South, while optimising resources and maximising effectiveness.
