Brigadier (P) R A M S Melvin is Director Operational Capability, UK Ministry of Defence. He was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1975.

Brigadier Melvin has seen a variety of regimental service and staff (general and joint) employment in the UK, Germany, the Balkans, the Middle East, Africa and Central America. He was appointed the Ministry of Defence’s Director Operational Capability in 2004, responsible for joint lessons capture and analysis. In 2006 Brigadier Melvin assumes the post of General Officer Commanding United Kingdom Support Command (Germany), on promotion to major general.

Brigadier Melvin was appointed MBE in the 1991 Gulf War Honours List and the OBE in 1997. His biography of Erich von Manstein is to be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is due out in January 2009.
