Lord Owen on Two Hundred Years of British-Russian Relations

calendarclock - (GMT)

A conversation with The Rt. Hon. Lord Owen on his new book, ‘Riddle, Mystery, and Enigma: Two Hundred Years of British-Russian Relations’, which explores the military, geopolitical, and diplomatic relationships between Britain and Russia.

From pragmatic alliances to open hostility, ‘Riddle, Mystery, and Enigma’ depicts a relationship often governed by principle as by suspicion, expediency, or outright necessity. This webinar comes at a time when relations between Putin’s Russia and Britain are at a historic low. Drawing on both imperial and Soviet history, Lord Owen will seek to explain the unique nature of Putin’s autocracy.

The Rt. Hon. Lord Owen served as UK Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister James Callaghan from 1977 to 1979, and later co-founded and went on to lead the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Between 1992 and 1995, Lord Owen served as EU peace negotiator in the former Yugoslavia. He now sits as an Independent Social Democrat in the House of Lords.

The webinar will be moderated by Gill Bennett, RUSI Senior Associate Fellow and former Chief Historian, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
