ISIS in South Asia

With ISIS losing territory in Iraq and Syria, there are questions surrounding the organizational form the group will take next. Kabir Taneja will discuss his recent monograph, The ISIS Phenomenon: South Asia and Beyond, which aims to fill the lacuna in the current understanding of the group’s influence in India and South Asia by looking at specific cases of individuals targeted for recruitment. In addition, the report provides a detailed look at ISIS’ conception and operational structure as well as the evolving nature of terrorism and the factors that continue to strengthen and propagate jihadist ideologies.

 Speaker Biography

Kabir Taneja is an Associate Fellow with Observer Research Foundation’s Strategic Studies programme. His primary research interest is India’s relations with West Asia/Middle East. He studies domestic political dynamics, terrorism, nonstate militant actors, and the general security paradigm of the region. Kabir has previously held positions as a Researcher and Fellow with the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Germany), Fridtjof Nansen Institute (Norway), and Takshashila Institution (India). He has written extensively for various publications, including The New York Times, The Hindu, Suddeutsche Zeitung, The Huffington Post, Politico, Quartz, The Diplomat, and Mint.
