A conversation with Ambassador Sylvie Bermann, RUSI Trustee and former French Ambassador to the UK, on the major foreign and security policy challenges facing the next French President.

The French people are deciding in two rounds this month on whether to give President Emmanuel Macron a second five-year term or entrust a different candidate with the presidency. It is an unpredictable election, one that could mark a shift to the right in French politics if there is a surge of support for President Macron’s current top challenger, Marine Le Pen.

Ambassador Bermann will reflect on the challenges the next President will face, from handling the war in Ukraine, to developing critical partnerships with allies in the EU, NATO and other multilateral institutions.

Ambassador Sylvie Bermann held some of France’s top diplomatic posts, including those in Russia (2017-2019), the United Kingdom (2014-2017) and China (2011-2014).

The webinar will be moderated by The Lord Ricketts GCMG GCVO, RUSI’s Vice-Chair and former British Ambassador to France.
