As Prime Minister Theresa May made clear in her speech at the Munich Security Conference in February, the UK is committed to building a ‘deep and special partnership’ on foreign, defence and security policy with the EU after Brexit. To discuss the future of European defence and security cooperation, and the UK’s role in securing it post-Brexit, RUSI will be joined by Dr Nathalie Tocci, Special Advisor to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

While collective defence has traditionally been considered the responsibility of NATO, key European states including France and Germany have over the past decade promoted the idea of enhanced military and security cooperation through the European institutions. The establishment of Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) on defence by 25 EU countries in November 2017 potentially marks a significant step towards achieving this. Where does the UK fit into this vision and what contribution might it be expected to make and how?
