Ensuring the Next Generation’s Security and Prosperity: Cyber Security and the Dawn of the 5G Era

This discussion will cover a range of national security related cyber topics including 5G communication infrastructure policy, economic espionage, trade secret theft and foreign election interference. The event will be moderated by Gordon Corera, the BBC’s security correspondent.

The Honorable John Demers became U.S. Assistant Attorney General for National Security on February 22, 2018. In that capacity, he leads the Department of Justice’s efforts to combat national security related cyber-crime, terrorism and espionage, to enforce export control and sanctions laws, to use the authorities of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and to conduct national security review of foreign investments.  In November 2018, John was selected to lead the Attorney General’s China Initiative, put in place to counter the Peoples Republic of China’s persistent and aggressive economic espionage, trade secret theft, hacking and other related crimes. Prior to rejoining the Department, John was Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at The Boeing Company, where he held several senior positions including in Boeing Defense, Space and Security, and as lead lawyer and head of international government affairs for Boeing International. He graduated from Harvard Law School and the College of the Holy Cross.

Mr Robert L. Strayer is the U.S Deputy Assistant Secretary for Cyber and International Communications and Information Policy. In this capacity, he leads development of international cybersecurity, Internet, data, and privacy policy and related negotiations with foreign governments. He has led dozens of bilateral and multilateral dialogues with foreign governments’ foreign affairs and communications ministries. Mr Strayer was named by the President to lead the 90-plus person U.S. delegation to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates in 2018, and served as vice-chair of the conference. He managed the successful election of first U.S. citizen to an ITU senior management position in more than two decades. The U.S. also achieved successful, pro-innovation results on resolutions related to cybersecurity and emerging technologies. Before joining the State Department, Mr Strayer was the general counsel for the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee under the leadership of Senator Bob Corker (R-TN). In that position, he oversaw the drafting and passage of the committee’s legislation and advised the Chairman on policy matters, including cyber security, sanctions and digital economic policy. Mr Strayer received a law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was Order of the Coif, and earned his B.A. in Economics, summa cum laude, from Denison University.
