Daesh After the Caliphate

calendarclock - (BST)

An event exploring the fight against Daesh with Michael Weiss, author of ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror

Much media coverage in recent weeks has been given over to Daesh’ territorial losses across both Syria and Iraq. Since the beginning of 2016, the group has allegedly lost around 16 percent of its ground. Reports also suggest that the US-led coalition operation to complete the liberation of Mosul is a matter of weeks away.

At the same time the fear that conflict is shifting towards the West grows. Europe is the target for terrorist acts as demonstrated in Paris and Brussels, but it is also a recruitment ground. Young European Muslims are being drawn into fighting attracted glossy propaganda, exporting Jihadism around the continent.

Author Michael Weiss will discuss how Daesh is exacerbating the tensions between coalition partners on the battlefield in order to ensure the maintenance of key population centres, principally Raqqa and Mosul. He will also look at how the fight against Daesh in Syria and Iraq could potentially intensify the terrorist threat to Europe and offer some thoughts about how this threat could be mitigated.

Michael Weiss is the co-author of ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror as well as a Senior Editor at The Daily Beast and CNN Contributor.

The discussion will be chaired by RUSI Research Fellow Dr Aniseh Bassiri Tabrizi.
