Over the summer, a number of landmark political events occurred in the UK: the country voted to leave the European Union and got a new Prime Minister. But the summer also brought many changes to UK nuclear policy. Through decision and indecision, be it on Hinkley or Successor, Brexit or Scottish Independence, nuclear issues have been centre stage in this period of change.

As part of UK PONI’s mission to encourage a cross-generational exchange of ideas, this panel will bring together emerging and established experts from across the civil and military domain to discuss the new environments for nuclear regulation, new build, deterrence and industry in light of Britain’s change of Prime Minister and its relationship with the EU.

Speakers include:

Laura Rockwood is the Executive Director of the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation, and was formerly at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as the Section Head for Non-Proliferation and Policy Making in the Office of Legal Affairs.

Sebastian Brixey-Williams is a Project Leader at BASIC (the British American Security Information Council) in London, and has conducted research into the UK’s nuclear deterrent.

Malcolm C. Grimston is a Senior Research Fellow at Imperial College and an Associate Fellow at Chatham House.  He is a regular media contributor on energy and nuclear matters, notably during the 2011 crisis at Fukushima.

The panel discussion will be followed by a wine reception.
