Australian Foreign Policy and the Indo-Pacific

Frances Adamson, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, set out Australia’s vision for its region and talked about how Australia is working with regional partners, close allies and global powers to promote an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

The Indo-Pacific is a region characterised by growth, dynamism and opportunity. It is also a region of strategic competition, and events in the Indo-Pacific will go some way to determining the shape of international relations globally.

Speaker Biography

Ms Adamson is the head of Australia’s foreign service, which includes responsibility for foreign policy, trade and international development. From 2011 to 2015, Ms Adamson was Australia’s Ambassador to China. She served in the Australian Consulate-General in Hong Kong in the late 1980s during the early years of China's reform and opening. From 2001 to 2005, she was seconded as Representative to the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei. She has served twice in the Australian High Commission in London, most recently as Deputy High Commissioner and before that as Political Counsellor.
