A lecture by Major General Bruce Brealey, General Officer Commanding Theatre Troops, UK Ministry of Defence.
Major General Brealey will review the challenges of current operations and the shifting nature of the operational environment. He will discuss how the Royal Artillery (RA) is responding by changing the approach to Integration, Precision Strike, Find and Force Protection.
Major General Bruce Brealey joined the Army in 1982 and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery. Regimental duty in Germany and the UK, including an operational tour in Northern Ireland, was followed by attendance on the Army Command and Staff Course, a tour in the MOD and command of 159 (Colenso) Battery, 26 Regiment RA in Germany. He then served as a member of the Directing Staff at the Army Command and Staff College, Camberley and the Joint Service Command and Staff College in Kuwait.
He assumed command of 26 Regiment RA in February 1999 and deployed the Regiment to Kosovo with 19 (Mechanised) Brigade. Command was followed by another tour in the Ministry of Defence as the Deputy Director Equipment Capability with responsibility for all artillery, naval fire support and air-to-ground weapon system programmes. He was promoted to Brigadier and appointed Commander Royal Artillery (CRA) 3 (UK) Division in December 2002. He deployed with the Division on Op TELIC in July 2003 in command of the Offensive Support Group and was also responsible for synchronising all non-kinetic operations. This was followed by three years as the ACOS Plans in HQ LAND leading all organisational change, resource and communication planning.
On promotion to Major General in October 2007, he re-deployed to Iraq as the Deputy Commanding General of the Multinational Corps and led the Corps’ partnership with Iraqi Security Forces. In November 2008, he assumed command of Theatre Troops – a division within the Field Army comprising 11 formations, including 1st Artillery Brigade and 32,000 troops. He has served as the Honorary Colonel of 26 Regiment RA since 2006.
