Looking Forward to NATO’s Bucharest Summit: The Transformation of the Alliance

A Lecture by His Excellency Mr Teodor Melescanu, Minister of Defence of Romania

NATO Summit

Mr Teodor Melescanu, Romania’s Defence Minister, will address the Institute on 15 November at 14:45 hours, on the transformation of the Alliance.

Romania is currently engaged in the Iraq, Afghanistan and Western Balkans operations, and has pledged to continue its contributions into the foreseeable future. The country will also be hosting the next NATO summit in early April 2008. Mr Melescanu’s presentation comes, therefore, at a particularly appropriate time.

During his talk, the Romanian Defence Minister will also outline Romania’s position on regional security issues – such as Kosovo, and the various Partnership for Peace programmes – as well as outlining his country’s future contributions to the Alliance, and to European security frameworks.

Mr Melescanu was initially trained as a diplomat, specialising in disarmament and international security issues. After serving as Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1992 to 1996, Mr Melescanu was president of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Romanian Senate (the parliament’s upper house), until 2000. A Vice President of the ruling National Liberal Party, Mr Melescanu was appointed Defence Minister in April 2007.

The Minister’s speech will be on the record, but the subsequent discussion will be without attribution.

RUSI members will get priority in seat allocation, but the event is also open to members of the public.
