Professor Shai Feldman

Professor Shai Feldman, Director of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University, will be present at the Institute for a discussion meeting on ‘Israel’s Defence and Security Policy: Strategic Directions’.

More than a year since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, the impact of that conflict continues to divide public opinion, whilst raising serious questions about the efficacy of Israel’s response.

With the prospect of military confrontation between the West and Iran steadily increasing, and uncertainly still looming over Israel’s recent air strikes on Syrian targets, the future of Israel’s defence and security policy remains a matter of considerable speculation.

In this RUSI Middle East Forum, Professor Feldman will discuss the nature of Israel’s evolving threat environment and assess the country’s expected response by addressing some of the following questions:

  • How has the IDF's posture changed in the aftermath of Israel's summer 2006 war with Hezbollah?
  • How does Israel view its threat environment - from rockets launched from Gaza, through to the possibility of the reigniting of Palestinian violence, and a nuclear infrastructure developed in Iran - and how does it address these threats?
  • Similarly, how does the Jewish state intend to address future threats?"

Professor Shai Feldman is Director of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University.  From 1997-2005, he served as Head of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University.  He is a Member of the Board of Directors of Harvard University's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, and from 2001-2003, he served as a Member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.

Spaces are limited, and will be allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.

This event is open to RUSI Members only.
