Virtual currencies (VCs) including Bitcoin are new technologies that have been hailed as vehicles for innovation in payments services; financial inclusion; and enabling greater speed and efficiency in cross-border value transfer. As with other financial products and services however, the technology also presents financial crime risks, from the use of VCs in ‘Dark Web’ marketplaces to the varying levels of anonymity and pseudonymity of the VCs themselves, which may enable criminality to be hidden from view.

This roundtable discussion will seek to explore these risks in greater detail, drawing upon the experience of stakeholders from law enforcement, government and the private sector. It will assess the current responses, and explore if and where further regulation may be needed to mitigate the risks identified.
